Composite Decking for Sale in NSW: The Complete 2026 Buyer's Guide

A deck is one of the best places to enjoy the NSW outdoors, from summer barbecues in Western Sydney to quiet mornings on the Central Coast. But timber decks need sanding, oiling and repairs year after year. That is why more homeowners are choosing composite decking in NSW: the warm look of timber with far less maintenance.

In this guide, we explain what composite decking is, how it compares with timber, where to use it, board sizes and prices, and how to work out how many boards you need.

What Is Composite Decking?

Composite decking boards are made from a blend of materials designed to look like timber but resist the problems timber has outdoors. Our boards have a textured woodgrain surface, so they look natural and feel good underfoot.

Composite Decking vs Timber Decking

Composite decking

Timber decking

Maintenance

Wash with soap and water

Sand and re-oil every 1–2 years

Splinters

No splinters

Can splinter and crack over time

Rot and termites

Resists rot and insects

Can rot; hardwoods need treatment

Colour

Even colour, fades less

Greys in the sun without oiling

Upfront cost

Similar to or higher than timber

Lower for basic pine, higher for hardwood

Long-term cost

Lower, with almost no upkeep

Higher, because of oil, labour and repairs

For busy families and investors, the time and money saved on maintenance usually outweigh the higher upfront price.

Where to Use Composite Decking

  • Backyard decks: a low-maintenance space for barbecues, kids and pets.
  • Alfresco and outdoor dining areas: pairs well with brickwork, sandstone and cream façades common in NSW homes.
  • Around pools: no splinters for bare feet, and no oiling after every summer.
  • Garden paths and entertaining zones: a clean, modern finish for outdoor living.
  • Rental and investment properties: less upkeep between tenants and a look that adds appeal.

Always check fixing requirements and suitability for your site before you build, especially for raised decks, balconies or bushfire-prone areas.

How Many Decking Boards Do You Need?

Each board covers about 0.78 m² once you allow a small gap between boards, so you need roughly 1.3 boards per square metre. Add about 10% for cuts and offcuts.

Example: a 4 × 5 m deck is 20 m². That is 20 × 1.3 = 26 boards, plus 10% = about 29 boards, or around $1,247 in boards.

This covers the boards only. You will also need a frame (joists), fixings and trims.

Installing Composite Decking: The Basics

  1. Build or check a level, well-drained frame with joists at the spacing the board requires.
  2. Leave space under the deck for airflow.
  3. Fix the boards with the recommended clips or screws, leaving gaps between boards and at the ends for expansion.
  4. Finish the edges with fascia boards or trims.

Always confirm joist spacing and fixings with us before you build. For raised decks, balconies or large projects, use a licensed builder.

Caring for Composite Decking

Sweep regularly and wash with warm soapy water and a soft brush. There is no sanding, staining or oiling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I buy composite decking in NSW? You can order composite decking boards online from Sun Trade at shop.sun-trade.com.au. Contact us with your postcode to check stock and delivery.

How much does composite decking cost? Our composite decking boards are $43.00 each for a 5400 × 140 × 22 mm board. A 20 m² deck needs about 29 boards, or roughly $1,247 in boards before the frame and fixings.

Is composite decking better than timber? For most homes, yes, if you want low maintenance. Composite does not need sanding or oiling and does not splinter. Timber costs less upfront but more to maintain.

Does composite decking get hot in the sun? All decking warms up in direct summer sun, and darker colours get hotter. For sunny, exposed areas, a lighter colour like grey or teak is a good choice.

Can I install composite decking myself? Confident DIYers can, if the frame is level and built to the right joist spacing. For raised decks or balconies, use a licensed builder.

Can I get a sample before I buy? Yes. Contact us by phone or WhatsApp to request a sample.
